Gua Sha

Gua sha therapy in Shawnee, Lenexa & Overland Park — instrument-assisted soft tissue work for chronic pain, tightness, and circulation.

Gua sha is an instrument-assisted technique that uses a smooth-edged tool to work along muscle and fascia. Rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and widely used in modern sports therapy, it improves local circulation and helps release restrictions that hands alone struggle to reach.

It is particularly effective for stubborn, long-standing tightness — the IT band that never loosens, the forearm tension from a desk job or grip-heavy sport, the calf that stays tight no matter how much you stretch.

Gua sha is typically used as part of a session alongside hands-on massage rather than as a standalone treatment.

Good for

  • Chronic pain and long-standing muscle tightness
  • IT band, calves, forearms, and other dense tissue
  • Plantar fasciitis and tennis / golfer’s elbow
  • Improving circulation to slow-healing areas
  • Scar tissue and adhesions

What to expect

  1. 1A lubricated tool is drawn along the muscle in firm, repeated strokes
  2. 2Temporary redness or light bruising ("sha") in the treated area is normal and fades in a few days
  3. 3Usually combined with hands-on massage in the same session
  4. 4Not used over open skin, acute injuries, or for clients on blood thinners — let Kirstin know
